My name is Jason, but people call me Lunchbox, and I’m a Dead Head.
Born in the waning days of 1981, I’ve been a fan of the Grateful Dead since 1995 when I was in middle school. I listened to the Dead a lot, but I didn’t really get it for a number of years. (I remember buying Hundred Year Hall when it came out and skipping past the monster Other One on it. Now I would never think of doing such a thing.) It seems that a lot of heads have a preference for one era or another, and that oftentimes correlates to when they got on the bus. I’m in my early 30s now, and I never saw the band with Jerry, but I’ve seen a number of post-Jerry projects and have recordings of even more. I certainly have my favorite years, but in general I like it all. I expect this little experiment will reveal more about my tastes in Dead music, however, so I’m interested to see how it goes.
I am a trained historian, earning a PhD in Irish history from Loyola University Chicago. Before that I studied history at Oakland University in Michigan, where I was born and raised. In addition to my interest in the Dead I am a sports fanatic (primarily lacrosse and hockey), a husband, a father, and a published author. I live near Denver, Colorado with my wife, two children, and a dog. So some of these things, and perhaps other facets of my life may come through in these pages. I’m not in the business of baring my soul, but rather exploring the relationship between my life and Dead music.

Nice site Lunchbox. And awesome photo of redrocks. Its encouraging to come across young heads like yourself who help keep the spirit alive. And even more surprising to see people who ‘get’ it post Jerry. Its such a difficult thing to relate the experience to people who weren’t there……but obviously you get it on some level.
The Dead came into my life at a young age and had a profound influence on me. Now, almost 20 yrs after the last show there still isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t think about those times…..the best times of my life I can say with complete honesty. I miss it deeply and sometimes I wonder if I’m too obsessed with an experience that is now in my distant past. But such were the gifts of that experience that I will always bleed Grateful Dead to the end of my days.
