Day 325: All Along The Watchtower, 7/4/89

When I first started working on this project an old friend from high school contacted me and offered to help. With his assistance I was able to move away from the world of blogspot and to my own site. I’m very much appreciative of the help he’s provided and so it’s about time I give him a tip of the cap with a song I know he’ll enjoy.

Whereas I tend to be rather blase about the Dylan covers, he loves them, especially All Along The Watchtower. So this one goes out to Mike Healy of Delaware Digital.

The Dead played All Along the Watchtower 124 in an eight year span. It seems like a lot, but I’m reminded of Me & Bobby McGee, which I noted a few days ago was played almost 120 times in a 4 year span. So when you think about it Watchtower wasn’t played as frequently as it seemed, at least to me. (On average 15 times per year since 1987.)

Perhaps it was just the times, but one thing I will credit Watchtower with is giving Jerry an opportunity to play “rock god.” The balls-to-the-wall type of guitar playing wasn’t really Jerry’s forte, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t do it. Watchtower provides just a glimpse of what the big man could do when he wanted to release the hounds.

Weir plays the familiar chord progression of All Along the Watchtower to open. Jerry quickly jumps in the game with some impassioned, squealing guitar lines, and just before Bobby starts singing Brent goes to work on his B3. There is real power behind their playing here. Brent starts off the instrumental section around the 2nd minute with a blazing fury of B3. It’s like his fingers will erupt into flames at any moment. Jerry continues the energy and tempo as he takes over the lead duties. The notes come faster and faster, and coupled with a bit of crunchy distortion moves the “Rock” setting up a few notches to “epic.” Jerry seems hellbent on establishing himself as a rock god with this type of playing. He and Brent continue to push the pace until they see an opening to temper their playing and segue into Morning Dew.
